That’s one of the many reasons the jungle was such a disgrace, because we were doing the work of two governments and the world’s major NGOs without any of their budget or resources... and yet most of us had never done aid work in our lives’ - JACK, build team coordinator

A New Normal is a series of five 30 minute documentaries featuring the audio diaries of five Syrians as they attempt to lay down roots in their countries of asylum. With diarists in the UK, Germany, Sweden, and Turkey the series is intended to give an intimate insight into the day-to-day experience of trying to start life from scratch in an alien country, having left everything you know behind.
After fleeing the war in Syria, Shafik, Aya and their three children now find themselves in Istanbul, trying to find sense in the confusion of all that has gone before, and to come to terms with their new reality.
Taking his camera with him, British filmmaker Saf Suleyman travels to Turkey to reunite with his Father, Shafik, and get to know the half siblings he has never met. While relationships gently blossom, Saf learns of the devastating impact that the Syrian conflict has had on this young family, of their longing for their homeland and of their hopes and fears, as they tentatively dare to look ahead at what the future might hold.
